acted as copromotors.

Congratulations to Marija!

Summary of the theses:
Traditionally, conceptual modelling language research and engineering consider syntactic-semantic qualities of language definition as isolated from language use. Motivated by the need to better reflect on relations between modelling standards and practical needs for language support in enterprise modelling, the thesis focuses on theoretically understanding modelling language use.

Beyond traditional syntax-semantics-pragmatics distinction, modelling language is studied in the thesis as primarily a conceptual system. Drawing on insights into structure and functioning of conceptual knowledge in natural languages, an alternative conception of modelling language is formulated. This proposition entails that, beyond definitional clarity of individual constructs, the pragmatic coherence of conceptual foundation is crucial for effective understanding and acquisition of modelling language. The thesis proposes that the effectiveness of modelling language in the modelling process is subject to continuous negotiation within the socio-pragmatic modelling context, and identifies factors that affect this process and shape modelling language use in enterprise modelling.
